New Rams and Chargers SoFi Stadium Opening Next Summer!
December 10, 2019
After 20 years without one, L.A. finally has a football team. Not just one football team, but two! The St. Louis Rams came to Los Angeles in 2016 and once again became the Los Angeles Rams, while the San Diego Chargers came to Los Angeles in 2017 and became the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Rams and Chargers are spending $5 billion on their new stadium. It is expected to be completed in 2020. The stadium is being called SoFi L.A. Stadium & Entertainment District at Hollywood Park but is located in Inglewood. It is being built by the Dallas firm HKS Architects.
The stadium complex will feature retail, commercial office space, a hotel, residential units, and outdoor park uses. The stadium consists of 298 acres and 70,000 seats. It will have 260 luxury suites and more than 13,000 premium seats. This stadium is expected to host the 2028 Olympics.
The stadium where the Rams currently play is The L.A. Memorial Coliseum. The old stadium serves multiple purposes (not just NFL games) and has been recently renovated by USC. In fact, the grand opening will not be an NFL game, because they are planning to open the stadium in July or June of 2020 and will feature Taylor Swift breaking in the new arena with a series of concerts.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that NFL fans and Los Angeles will have a new fan experience. This mega complex is said to be bigger than Disneyland. SoFi Stadium is so far the most expensive stadium in the NFL. It also has the enlarged capacity to fit over 100,00 people (including standing room areas). The stadium has a huge transparent roof that not only covers the stadium itself but a plaza for fans. The sides of the stadium are wide open to allow natural ventilation. Travelers coming to Los Angeles will be impressed to see the new stadium through the window of their airplane when landing at LAX.
