BCCHS Play Pro Presents Treasure Island Nov. 17-20
December 1, 2022
As we approach the end of the first semester, our very own Play Pro performed a new play called Treasure Island written by Ken Ludwig. In preparation for Treasure Island, play pro worked nonstop for months to get this play ready to perform for students, staff, and parents.
The show was performed over four afternoons and evenings from Thursday, November 17 through Sunday, November 20, 2022. Although the acting relied on the play pro students, the whole set was designed and constructed by BCCHS Drama instructor Mr. Wienckowski and his advanced technical theatre students. The set took months to build but thanks to the hard-working technical theatre students, the set was done extremely fast.
Treasure Island first started off as a book written by Robert Louis Stevenson and then was adapted into a movie in 1950. As a result, Treasure Island is adapted around two main characters named Jim Hawkins and Captain Silver.
The play follows Hawkins on a dangerous adventure to find the hidden treasure, but on the way to finding this treasure, he encounters many obstacles that he has to face. One of the obstacles Hawkins has to face is Captain Silver and his group of pirates, who are also trying to find the treasure.
Chaos occurs when both groups end up finding out about each other. Only one group will end up with the treasure and it is only a matter of which group it will be. This thrilling and heartfelt adventure has many adventures waiting to be revealed.
During the week of the shows, the cast of Treasure Island was divided into two different groups. There was a blue cast that performed on November 17 at 4 p.m. and the 19th at 7 p.m. as well as a gold cast that performed on November 18 at 7 p.m. and the 20th at 4 p.m.
Birmingham’s Treasure Island blue cast consisted of Savina Rodriguez (11) who played Jim Hawkins and Frankie Carias (11) who played Captain John Silver.
Treasure Island’s gold cast consisted of Tommy Guttierrez (11) who also played Jim Hawkins and Martin Sandoval (12) who played Captain John Silver.
All of the proceeds they made from the show will go to play pro to help them on their upcoming trip to New York City for a drama competition.
I asked two of the cast members from Treasure Island what they were most excited about once Treasure Island started and here’s what they had to say. Savina Rodriguez (11) said, “I’m excited that I’m the main character since it’s my first time being the main character and having a spotlight, but I’m also very excited to act with my friends and get the chance to show people how hard we work on it.”
Sofia Reyes (11) added, “What I’m most excited about once Treasure Island starts is having an actual audience be there and being able to show off all our hard work that we’ve been doing for the past few months. It took a lot of energy and time so having people come to support us means so much. Also being able to celebrate with the cast once it’s over because it takes a village to create a play. In doing so, it feels nice to appreciate everyone and not stress so much.”
