On Friday, September 13, 2024, Birmingham hosted the annual Club Rush for the fall semester. Students made posters promoting their clubs and gave treats to those who joined. A large crowd formed as students got excited to see all the different kinds of clubs and all they had to offer. Club representatives enthusiastically tried to convince students of the important reasons why they should join their clubs.
Club Rush is organized by the communications committee in ASB, which is specifically in charge of keeping clubs in order. When interviewing a senior committee member, she mentioned that the stress of planning Club Rush was not as much for me but rather the commissioner of the committee.
ASB executive historian, Lizbeth Covarrubias (12), explained that the layout is typically the stressful part, as they need to avoid traffic in the sidewalks in the quad. Everyone I spoke to generally agreed that students did a pretty good job at coordinating the event and that it went well, but that there could be improvements in communication between the ASB members and assigning specific jobs instead of just having members walking around.
I also spoke to club representative Mia Alcala-Vasquez (12), who participated in the club rush to represent the Jane Goodall Society Club. When asked why she thought it was important for students to get involved and start joining clubs, she replied, “I think it’s important to help people feel included and hang around with people who have similar interests.” She feels as though she has had this experience in the clubs that she has joined throughout high school. Overall, Club Rush is important because it not only helps students meet new people, but also makes them look more competitive when it comes time to complete their college applications.
