Emily Mercado, Staff Writer

Emily Mercado is a 16-year-old junior who attends Birmingham Community Charter High School. This is her third year attending Birmingham, but her first year in journalism. She was put into this class by her counselor, but she’s glad because so far she enjoys the class and would like to continue to take it next year. Emily also really enjoys attending Birmingham; she thinks it’s a great school to be in. She has made many good friends over the years and has learned a lot from her previous teachers. One of her favorite subjects in school is English. This is because she has always had a liking for writing, and she also loves English because of the books it has introduced her to. One of those books is “The Blindside.” Some of her other favorite books include ” The Outsiders,” “The Lovely Bones,” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”

Emily was born on July 11, 2009. She has an extremely close relationship with her family. She is the third eldest child out of seven. She has two brothers and four sisters, and despite it being a lot, she loves her big family and being an older sister. She’s especially close with her older sister, even though they’re 8 years apart; they have an extremely close relationship, and she’s someone Emily looks up to and considers to be her best friend.

Her mom is from Oaxaca, and her dad is from Jalisco. She also owns four cats, three Tabbies, and one Bombay cat. Their names are Sophie, Callie, Oliver, and Nebula. One thing she loves about having cats is seeing how different their personalities can be.  Even though people say cats can be boring, Emily can easily disagree. For example, two of her cats are very playful, and the other two are the opposite, but each cat is different. She got her first cat eight years ago when she was in 5th grade, and that’s what started her love for cats. The cartoon character Pusheen has also grown to become one of her favorites because of how much it reminds her of her cat Callie. She enjoys collecting things that contain the character; she also collects other things like mugs or Hot Wheels.

Some of her favorite animals include elephants and tigers. Elephants are one of her favorites because they represent good luck in many cultures, and Emily likes to believe that this is true; she has a few small elephant figurines around in her home, hoping they bring good luck to her life. Some other things about Emily are that her favorite color is orange, and she likes to watch movies or listen to music in her free time. One of her favorite movies is “The Prisoners,” and some of her favorite songs at the moment are “That Girl” and “Number One” by Pharrell Williams, “Soulmate” by Mac Miller, “Meet me halfway” by Black Eyed Peas, or “Pictures of You” by The Cure.

Emily’s goals and aspirations in life are to be successful and happy. She might not know exactly what she wants to be yet, but what she does know is that she would like to have a future career with a major in writing. Emily absolutely loves to write, she sees it as a way to express yourself.  For example, in a way, you could tell a lot about someone by the way they write. Depending on the content, it can sometimes capture the author’s personality. Writing can be very creative, imaginative, professional, or informative. Emily views writing as something that can be anything you want it to be; you’re the author, so you’re in control. This is one of the major reasons Emily loves to write and read.

Another thing Emily is interested in is being a psychologist. Emily thinks the study of the human mind and behavior is very fascinating, as the idea of exploring someone’s internal mental process is very intriguing to her. Whether it’s studying social, cognitive, or developmental psychology, it’s something Emily is interested in. Psychology can help provide strategies to manage emotions or mental health, and it allows you to understand your behavior.
