Matthew Romero Garcia, Staff Writer
Matthew Romero Garcia is a 15-year-old sophomore who attends Birmingham Community Charter High School. He was born June 21, 2009, in Woodlands Hills, California. He recently transferred to Birmingham and hopes to have a better experience here than at his previous school. He is part Salvadorian, part Colombian, and part Mexican. He has no other siblings and has been an only child his whole life. He doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do with his life career-wise, but he wants to work hard to achieve his goals. He is excited for the opportunities he has.
Garcia has always played sports since he was a little kid. He started at the striker position in soccer from ages 6-8 then started playing right back from ages 8-10. In middle school, he did not play any sports, but in 9th grade, he joined the football team at Reseda Charter High School. This year, he transferred schools and had only played two seasons for Reseda. He is in a league soccer team as of now and has hopes of joining the Birmingham football team or track team. He enjoys being active and watches the Mexican soccer league games with his dad. His favorite team from this league is America. He also enjoys watching the NFL and collegiate football. His favorite NFL team is the Cincinnati Bengals and his favorite collegiate football team is the Oregon Ducks. He has played football at the SoFi stadium before and wishes to visit it again. He wants to be able to attend an NFL game in a different state.
Some words that describe Garcia are smart, funny, and fortunate. He always has done well in school, keeping his GPA above 3.5. His favorite subject is math, which he has enjoyed for many years. Garcia got the opportunity to advance one year ahead of his grade in mathematics in 7th grade and has been in advanced classes ever since. He also enjoys writing and learning about the history of the world. Many of Garcia’s friends seem to be happy around him and laugh at his claims. He is also very fortunate because he has a home and family, and every blessing is provided to him by God. He is grateful to wake up every day and is thankful for everything he has. He is also a very big believer in God and gives all glory and praise to him.
Some of the hobbies he participates in are playing video games, drawing, and listening to music. His favorite game is Fortnite. He has been playing since 2017 and is a Fortnite veteran. He has also been interested in learning how to draw better since a young age. At his last high school, Reseda, he was allowed to participate in a drawing/art class which greatly improved his comprehension and deepened his knowledge of art.
Garcia is excited for the future. He can’t wait for the new opportunities and chances life has waiting for him. He also awaits the future with his new high school, Birmingham. He hopes to meet new people, make connections, and make these next 2 and half years at this school better than his last school.
