Rodrigo Pelaez

Rodrigo Pelaez, Staff Writer

Rodrigo Pelaez is a senior who is 17 years old and studies at Birmingham Community Charter High School. He loves all types of music and even stays traditional to his Peruvian background. He made his way to the U.S. at the age of eight and learned English in a matter of three months. He is the youngest brother of two boys and a sister who are all six years apart. Sports are intriguing for Rodrigo since he enjoys getting together with his brother and father and then watching UFC, boxing, or soccer matches.

One of the things that Rodrigo enjoys doing most is playing games, but also going to the gym with friends who are like family to him. He is naturally book-smart and enjoys taking on difficult calculus questions, which he struggles with most of the time. His love of music grew over the years when he would be strolling through the various types of music there and even listen to various music from Peru as well. In his junior year, he took on the challenge to take two AP classes which he passed both with a 4, and is now taking a variety of difficult classes in which he hopes to be successful.

Skating had been one of his favorite hobbies dating back to his 9th-grade year and he has enjoyed skating on a day-to-day basis. Peace was found within him when he would skate at the time due to his difficult personal issues at home. Eventually, skating was no longer his hobby.  Football took its place and he played through his 10th and 11th-grade years, but eventually, he lost the drive for it and focused on his studies to have a great career someday. There are still times in which Rodrigo practices his wide receiver skills with a St. Genevieve coach in group sessions and he still enjoys the game of football.

The French language became an important factor in his life and he studied French for about three years and will take the AP French exam in 2025. He takes time out of his day to improve his French skills by learning new phrases or reading passages in French–even though he might not always understand the whole text. Music in French eventually became one of Rodrigo’s favorite genres and he listened to this type of music to better his pronunciation in French. All of these studies stress out Rodrigo and he manages this by doing boxing/MMA and attempting to attend the gym daily. There are various types of colognes that Rodrigo likes and owns, but his favorite one would have to be Givenchy Gentleman Privée.
