Girls’ Varsity and JV Tennis started the season on October 1, 2014 and ended on October 30th and was considered “one of the best seasons in the past three years,” according to Captain Sara Zhobin. The team acquired  four new players this year to play on the JV team including: Alexis Fang, Abby Viramontes, Monique Caballero, and Syuzanna Darbinyna.

The season started and ended strong, with the team winning the first two pre-season matches as well as the last match of the season. Because of these wins, the team made it to the playoffs where they won their first match against SOCES (Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies). In the second round, they  were eliminated by Narbonne. However, individual players did advance in the playoffs. Two double teams advanced including Michelle Portillo with Tammy Nguyen and Cassandra Tayo with Sara Zhobin. In addition, Irene Feher competed in singles.

Unfortunately, this will be the last year Coach McGauley will be coaching/teaching at BCCHS. He will be leaving after the boy’s season next year; he coached the boy’s and girl’s teams for three years.

I asked Team Captain Sara Zhobin a few questions about this years tennis season:

How was the team chemisty this year?

“We did have team bonding, and we all met up at a player’s house and made tie-dye shirts and went swimming and just had fun. We also bonded by making the tennis float for homecoming which looked amazing!”

How many girls are seniors this year?

“Five girls are graduating this year, myself included, and I will miss all the girls. I know the girls that are staying will do an awesome job next year.”

What do you hope  happens to the team next year after the seniors leave?

“I hope the girls continue to be passionate about tennis and really strive to be the best. I hope they win more matches and just have fun like we all did this year.”

With the end of girls’ season approaching, their hits and misses have led to a great year which will hopefully continue next year.
