On January 29, 2025, a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on a training mission collided in mid-air with an American Airlines regional jet carrying 64 passengers above the Potomac River. This devastating accident, which brought about the death of 67 people on both aircraft, represented one of the most lethal aviation disasters in recent U.S. history. A complete investigation was then started by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This investigation sought to pinpoint what factors contributed to this tragic event.
Important people from the figure skating community were among the victims. Inna Volyanskaya, a former well-regarded Russian pair skater and an Ashburn Ice House coach in Virginia, perished in the devastating crash. Volyanskaya, age 59, was well-known for her contributions to the sport. She was both an outstanding mentor and a true rival. The skating community is sad that a devoted coach died too early.
The accident claimed the lives of American figure skaters Angela Yang and Sean Kay, along with their coach, Alexander “Sasha” Kirsanov. This tragedy occurred as the trio was coming back from a National Development Camp in Wichita, Kansas. “I lost everything,” Natalya Gudin, Kirsanov’s wife and coaching partner, stated, expressing truly deep grief. The figure skating community experienced pervasive shockwaves after the loss of all of these highly promising athletes and their entirely well-regarded mentors. Preliminary findings from the NTSB strongly suggest the Black Hawk helicopter crew missed several analytically important instructions from air traffic control before the collision. NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy stated that cockpit recordings suggest the crew may have missed instructions to keep the jet visually separated. Many serious worries exist regarding altimeter failures on the helicopter, failures that might have greatly helped in incorrectly judging the altitude while in flight. The investigation continues to understand what led to this tragic incident. The goal is understanding.
