Obama Moved America Forward

Obama Moved America Forward

With Obama’s presidency coming to an end in 2017 at the end of his second term, there is a certain amount of anticipation as citizens of the United States ponder about their future president. These thoughts of the future have been affected by how the past 8 years with Obama have gone. When Obama was sworn into office in 2009, excitement couldn’t be contained because for the first time in history, an African American had been elected into office. This marked a milestone in the history of America.

One of the many examples that Obama has proved to be a president with the right ideas in mind can be seen with the plans for better health care in America. In 2010, Obama signed the Affordable Care Act which was the first step in gaining better health care at affordable prices for Americans. America’s health care system has been an issue in the nation for a long time now and while it can be argued that the system isn’t perfect, it certainly was a step in the right direction. At the time, congress had been Democratic-controlled which made signing the bill possible in the first place. Referred to as Obamacare, this act would prove to help cover 17.6 million Americans according to September 2015 data. The amount of people uninsured fell from 15.7% to 9.2%. Although they aren’t astronomical numbers, Obama has done a fine job of putting America on the right track.

Obama made history again in 2015 when he helped legalize gay marriage. On June 26, 2015, interns from different news organizations ran with looks of sheer determination on their face to their respective news stations to deliver the news. On that day, the history of the United States had been altered forever. These two events are only a few of the many ideas that Obama had that did or could have made possible for America if only Congress had let him do his job. My personal opinion is that Obama did as great of a job as he was able to, while trying to satisfy everyone’s needs. Most people think that he could have done more with his presidency and it’s my belief that he did all that he could under the circumstances. Being a democratic president meant that Republicans would often disagree with his ideas and many of these ideas would be shut down in response. If anything, the future president will hopefully have the same determination to change things for the better in America.
