The 67th Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 2, 2025, at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, celebrated the year’s most outstanding musical achievements. Hosted by Trevor Noah for the fifth consecutive year, the ceremony featured memorable performances and historic wins.
Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” made history by sweeping all five of its nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. This achievement made him the second rap artist to win both awards, following Childish Gambino in 2019. Beyonce led the nominations with eleven nods and secured three awards, notably Album of the Year and Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter.” This win made her the first Black artist to receive Best Country Album and the first Black Woman to win Album of the Year since Lauryn Hill in 1999. Chappell Roan was honored as Best New Artist, while Sierra Ferrell dominated the American Roots category, winning all four nominations. Doechii’s “Alligator Bites Never Heal“ earned her Best Rap Album, making her the third woman to win this award, after Lauryn Hill in 1997 and Cardi B in 2019.
The ceremony featured a diverse lineup of artists. St. Vincent delivered a tribute to Los Angeles with “I Love L.A.,” while Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars performed “California Dreamin.“ Janelle Monáe honored Quincy Jones with a medley of his hits, and Shakira energized the audience with a performance of “Ojos Así.”
In response to the devastating wildfires affecting Southern California, the Recording Academy incorporated support for relief efforts into the ceremony. Commercial airtime was donated to promote small businesses impacted by the fires, and high school choir students from affected areas performed backup vocals during Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock’s rendition of “We Are the World.”
I went on and interviewed a few students to get their opinions on what they thought about the Grammys. I interviewed Haydee Cervantes (11) and asked her if she thought the Grammys were worth watching and she stated, “No, because it was boring and they showed clips on TikTok, but all the Grammy performances were worth watching because of TikTok’s 8.1 million viewers.” This indicates that many people didn’t have a full experience of the show because they watched it on TikTok.
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards not only celebrated musical excellence, but also highlighted the industry’s resilience and commitment to community support. As artists continue to innovate and inspire, the Grammys remain a pivotal platform for recognizing and honoring the diverse talents that shape the music landscape.
