Throughout the 1990s, Trump and Epstein socialized. At times, Donald J. Trump would host Epstein at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. The relationship between Trump and Epstein continued through the 2000s. Their relationship would capture public and media attention decades later.
In 2009, Epstein and his friend Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell (sued in 2015) were sued for recruiting Virginia Guiffre into a sex-trafficking ring where Epstein’s influential friends were passing her around. According to ‘The Epstein Files: A Timeline | Britannica, ’ it is stated that Guiffre may have been at the center of the eventual collapse of the relationship between Donald Trump and Epstein. Trump said in July of 2025 that he ended his friendship with Epstein because he had done something inappropriate. This statement later faced counter accusations that it was ended over some business gone wrong. However, their friendship had already been fractured by the end of 2004.
In July of 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was one of nearly 50 people in the “bawdy 50th-birthday album” for Epstein. This birthday album sparked interest in July 2025, and in September 2025, the Epstein estate released a Redacted Version of the album. It contained what seemed to be a body outline of a Young Girl, and at the bottom it was signed by Donald Trump. Trump later denied the story in The Journal and sued the paper. In 2007, the Federal prosecutors were ready to indict Epstein on nearly 60 federal charges. In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to Soliciting Prostitution and soliciting prostitution from a minor, after which he was sentenced to only 18 months in prison and allowed to work and return to jail at night. Epstein was caught up in trafficking and soliciting continuously. Although Trump would downplay their friendship, the media doesn’t seem to buy it.
After more than a decade, many people want to know: what is in those files that is so horrible that they don’t want to release them? Why haven’t they been released for more than a decade?
While interviewing Ashley Mendez (11) about her thoughts on the delayed release, she stated, “If they didn’t have anything to hide, why is it taking so long? That just makes it seem super suspicious in my opinion.” A part of the reason they haven’t is that ‘important’ public figures are in there. Such as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, who is the former Prince and brother of King Charles, Donald Trump, Trump’s former advisor Steve Bannon, President Bill Clinton’s Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, Kathryn Reummler, who was a lawyer in the White House counsel during Barack Obama’s presidency, and billionaire investor Peter Thiel. Having multiple people in government and royal positions is probably a reason the Epstein files weren’t released earlier. In an Interview with Evelyn Cotto (11) about her thoughts on how many important people were in them, she said, “Why are so many people in them? I know that it doesn’t automatically make them a bad person, but it seems so weird that so many of them are.”
President Donald Trump made an empty promise to the people of the United States in his 2024 campaign, claiming to declassify the files, stating he would have no problem releasing additional documents. This was yet another lie because by mid-to-late 2025, Trump did a total 180, stating that the matter was “pretty boring stuff” and that it was definitely a ‘Democratic Hoax’ made up to distract the Americans from the Republican success. While interviewing a classmate of mine about her thoughts on Donald Trump saying this, Valeria Martinez (11) stated,”Why does he want to try and make it seem like it is the Democrats’ fault? He should just own up to his ‘mistakes’ and admit he was lying about releasing the rest of the files.”
I agree with her, and Donald Trump didn’t stop at that; he would also lash out at reporters or supporters who continued to demand the release of the files. During November 2025, Trump came to his senses and publicly called for the House Republicans to vote to release the files, stating “we have nothing to hide,” and he signed the ‘Epstein Files Transparency Act’. Once they were released, multiple pages had redactions on them.
Now that the files are out, Americans have mixed feelings, a breath of relief for some and disappointment for others. Many aren’t as satisfied with the outcome because of how much time the government had to mess with and redact information in the files. Natalia Magana (11) questioned, “What is the point of ‘releasing’ the files if most of the information is being erased or redacted? We want the whole truth, not two to five sentences of it. We can’t even make a full conclusion of what is in there, with everything being blocked out.” They shouldn’t have been hidden from the public in the first place, some say. Pedophiles and sex traffickers are not supposed to be out and free, living with innocent people and children.
