Birmingham Community Charter High School holds Club Rush every semester. This semester was the 2026 Spring club rush on January 30. Multiple clubs (over 50) from Birmingham attend Club Rush to promote their clubs and get people to join. Some of the clubs included: Animation Club, Link Crew, Culinary Club, Car Club, Mecha Club, and Chess Club.
I interviewed BCCHS student Roselyn Rodriguez (11), the secretary of the Animation Club, about this club rush. I asked her if any of the clubs caught her attention. Rodriguez said, “Engineering Club because it’s my CTE and the Culinary Club because I love to eat!”
Rodriguez believes that club rush allows students to express their love for their hobbies without the worry of grades. Rodriguez says this allows students to choose which club they would want to participate in, and there is always an option to leave if they wish.
Club Rush allows students to join clubs that they might not be super interested in, but are willing to explore. For example, someone is able to join a journalism club to see if they enjoy it; if they find no interest in it, they are able to leave whenever. It’s a way to find what you like and what you don’t like. Rodriguez stated, “My favorite memory of Club Rush was giving out stickers and being with my club members.”Â
Club rush is also another way to socialize. Many new students, such as freshmen, may be too shy to go up to people. Having clubs and being in one allows those students to make friends with people who have similar interests. I also interviewed BCCHS student Zuleivy Gomez (11), who attended the 2026 Spring Club Rush. I asked her if she joined any clubs this semester, and if he did, which ones?
Gomez said, “I joined Chess Club because I found competing with other students interesting, and I wanted to see how the game of chess works.” Gomez also explained to me that at first she did not find chess interesting, but after joining the Chess Club meetings, she found that chess could be very fun and enjoys it. “It’s honestly so fun. I love watching other people play and talking to them about how they play out each of their strategies to win.” She wishes to be able to play on her own one day.
Being able to find a new interest is the best outcome for everyone. Students gain a new hobby to love and surround themselves with people from that community.
