The Russia-Ukraine conflict and war have been ongoing for over 12 years. The conflict began with Russia’s covert invasion and annexation of Crimea in February 2014. On February 24, 2022, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated dramatically into a full-scale invasion, marking over four years of intensified, large-scale war as of early 2026. From February 24, 2022 2014 to November 2025, there have been between 400,000 and 1.5 million estimated casualties (killed and wounded).
The public opinion on this war is deeply divided and has changed significantly since the 2022 invasion. Support for continued fighting has dropped, with many people, including civilians, citing the long, bloody nature of the conflict and territorial stalemate. Although a large portion of Ukrainians still oppose accepting peace on Russian terms, a growing number are becoming more open to territorial concessions if it means a quick end to the war.
As of late March 2026, the war in Ukraine has been characterized by grinding, high-casualty offensives, with Russia trying to use new mobilized personnel and making minor territorial gains in the East. Ukraine, on the other hand, has been conducting strategic counterattacks and using maritime drones to damage Russian capabilities. Besides that, negotiations are still ongoing with U.S.-Ukraine talks held in Florida to discuss security and a potential peace framework amid ongoing Russian airstrikes.
There is widespread belief both within Ukraine and internationally that the Russia-Ukraine war has lasted too long. With this war entering its fifth year in 2026, the conflict has increasingly become a war of attrition, leading to growing war weariness and a turn toward favoring negotiations to end it.
During an interview, BCCHS student Ashley Mendez (11) stated that she had forgotten about the war in all honesty, and that showed this reporter that it has been dragged out to the point that people are forgetting about it. BCCHS student Nik Nava (11) believes that this war needs to end, and I agree with him because it is only causing more innocent lives to be lost.
Russia has gained approximately 182 square miles of territory between mid January and mid February 2026. Russia has taken control of around 120,000 square kilometers of Ukraine, according to a CSIS analysis. The conflict is heavily dominated by drones, with a recent analysis from Ukraine’s arms monitor stating that they have changed traditional infantry engagement into 20-km kill zones. Private security is permitted to use military-grade arms to combat these drones by Russia.
Over 3.7 million people remain displaced within Ukraine, with millions lacking consistent electricity, heating, or even water. Official Ukrainian figures previously reported 70,000 killed, with unofficial estimates suggesting higher numbers. Financial Times reported that under U.S. pressure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy planned to announce his plan for wartime presidential elections and a referendum on a peace deal. The U.S. wants that deal finalized by June so that President Donald Trump can focus on the U.S. midterm elections, according to Axios.
