Quantum computing is one of the newest scientific breakthroughs of the 21st century. These computers are completely different from the regular computers we all use in our daily lives. These computers are much more complex due to the amount of scientific work put into them, and they can solve problems exponentially faster than a regular computer.
For example, these computers can solve calculations that usually take 10 to the power of 25 (ten septillion) years for a regular computer to solve, but the quantum one can solve it in just 5 minutes with things they use called qubits. Qubits are the main way these computers contain information. Unlike regular computers, which contain information by computing binary, the qubits used for these advanced computers can compute binary(0,1) at the same time because of something called superposition. The only problem with this is that people have mixed feelings about them, and they see them as both good and bad.
Furthermore, these computers are widely regarded as highly beneficial to humanity because they can help with research in the scientific community, thanks to their ability to simulate complex systems and solve problems quickly. Another advantage these computers bring to the table is that they can solve world problems that usually take ages to find a solution to, one being world hunger, and another being finding a cure for cancer.
Additionally, these computers’ solving capabilities can help mathematicians solve mathematical problems. For example, these computers can help with groundbreaking work like one of the one-million-dollar problems. The other group of people that may benefit is the government, because quantum computers are suspected of being able to find the location of someone to see if they are where they are supposed to be, which many people see with mixed emotions.
Additionally, many people see these computers as things that can lead to many security breaches in people’s personal information. For example, as I stated, it does bring the problem of finding someone with these computers, which can leak some information, like addresses. The other thing is that their data may be breached from these computers because of how they can break the encryption standard, which threatens global data security. Lastly, the only thing that scientists say is bad about these computers is that they are very costly; the average cost of these computers is 10 to 20 million dollars.
Finally, considering both of these factors, these computers can be useful in a lot of different ways, and they may also have a possible negative impact on humanity. The negative effects aren’t something to worry about, because these computers are very costly and hard to maintain. This means that these computers aren’t in the hands of the wrong people, but they are in the hands of trained professionals who don’t have any intentions of doing anything bad to people’s data. The future of these computers is in the hands of scientists due to the fact that they need the best people on board to do all this intensive research to continue to upgrade these advanced machines.
