The “Avatar” franchise has two of the top three highest-grossing movies of all time. There are three “Avatar” films: “Avatar,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and the most recent film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which was released on December 19 2025.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” was directed by James Cameron, with the lead role being played by Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully, and returning characters Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña, Lo’ak, played by Britain Dalton, Kiri, played by Sigourney Weaver, Spider, played by Jack Champion, and Tuk, played by Trinity Bliss.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” once again centers around the Sully family, and they are just trying to fit in and feel at home ever since being separated from their old home in the Omatikaya clan’s territory. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has a fire theme, with the antagonist Varang played by Oona Chaplin. Varang is the leader of the Mangkwan clan, also called the ash people. This Avatar movie focuses on the cycle of violence, grief, and the “ash” left behind by hatred, as the Mangkwan clan felt betrayed by Eywa.
This movie follows the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri living with the Metkayina clan, and Colonel Quaritch trying to capture Jake and Neytiri. In this movie, we see Lo’a,k the son of Neytiri and Jake Sully, have a lot of grief and guilt because he blames himself for his brother’s death. We also see Spider having trouble living among the Na’vi, since he needed an oxygen mask because he couldn’t breathe the air. He almost dies because his oxygen mask ran out of battery, but because of the will of Eywa, instead of dying, he becomes a true Na’vi because of Kiri, who has a special connection to Eywa.
Kiri finds out that she has no father and that she’s basically her mother’s clone. A character that surprisingly develops is Quaritch. Quaritch becomes more caring for his son, Spider, and more compassionate than in the past films.
This movie has already made a lot of money, and many people have watched it. Since quite a few people have watched this film, I went and asked a Birmingham student what they thought of the film.
“I think the graphics were good and there was a lot of action. I also think that Varang was a powerful leader and that they did a good job explaining her character,” said Sarita Gonzalez(10). There was a lot of excitement leading up to this movie, and looking at the reviews, it certainly didn’t disappoint.
