Manchester United, once known to scare the footballing world, was destined for greatness with the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, and many other legends. Now they are barely able to scratch out a win within their league. In the last nine months, Manchester United has not won back-to-back games in the Premier League. What has to change? The players? The management?
Manchester United has spent 200 million euros in the summer transfer window on three players. Benjamin Sesko, Mbuemo, and Cunha were seen as United’s new hope in bringing back the good days. Although they have qualities and skills to be a powerhouse, it’s too early for them to have the team on their back. Former players have been having problems with the team as well. Alejandro Garnacho, once viewed as a former star, is now viewed as a complete snake. Garnacho, who had problems with the management, is now a prime example of what United can do to players. Now he’s on his way to Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in England. Not only that, players who are being sent out to different teams are having the best season of their lives compared to their time at United.
Rasmus Hojlund is one of the prime examples of a player leaving Manchester United, and he is the key to what is holding players back. In the 24/25 season, he was barely able to scratch four goals in 29 games. This season, he was finally showing the player he is as he was sent on loan to Napoli in the Serie A in Italy. He has doubled his previous season with just nine games. Last season, we had another player who performed amazingly in another league. Antony was a huge investment for United as he transferred from Ajax for 50 million euros. Unfortunately, during his time at United, he was viewed as a joke. But as soon as he left United, he packed his bags to Betis and became a star.
From the stats, the players may not be the problem, but what about the manager? Sir Alex Ferguson, who is regarded as one of the best managers, if not the best, was put in charge of United in 1986. Since then, he has been one of the key reasons why Manchester United has become the powerhouse they were once known for when the team won 13 Premier League titles in the hardest football league in the world. The team also won the treble in the 1999 season.
Ferguson scouted some of the best players in the world, such as David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Phil Neville. Those players, and many more, have achieved great success in their careers thanks to Ferguson. Therefore, when he announced his retirement in the 2012/13 season, whichever manager was to take over the “Red Devils” had some big shoes to fill.
Since then, Manchester United has had over 10 managers in the last 13 years, and very few have achieved greatness. Yet Ruben Anorimm has just broken the streak against Liverpool after a decade of futility. While the future is unknown for the Red Devils, they can only go up, as they have already hit rock bottom.
